INEC to deploy BVAS, IReV in Kogi, Imo, Bayelsa polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC says that it will deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS for easy Voter Accreditation and authentication in November 11th Governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa States.

INEC Director for ICT, Dr Paul Omokore stated this in Akwanga, Nassarawa State during a two day Capacity workshop for INEC Press Corps in Preparation for the forthcoming Governorship elections.

He explained that a Voter would be identified by either the finger prints or facial identification and that where the BVAS could not identify a Voter by the two, such a person would not be allowed to vote.

He explained that results would also be uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IREV in real time on Election Day.

Dr Omokore further explained that IREV was not a collating system but rather a technology used to increase the transparency of the electoral process.

“IREV does not collate figures, IREV is used to take the picture of form EC8a and upload it to INEC IREV Portal.Election is won and lost at the Polling Units.”

The Director-General of the Electoral Institute, Dr Sa’ad Umar affirmed that the Commission had commenced training for various Electoral officers and adhoc staff that would participate in the Governorship elections in November 11.

The Team Leader, Development Alternatives Incorporated, DAI, Rudolf Elbling said his organisation would continue to support INEC to ensure it achieved its set goals.

Mr Elbling called on stakeholders in the electoral process to work towards deepening democracy in the country.

The Chief Technical Adviser to INEC Chairman ,Professor Bolade Eyinla appreciated DAI and other development partners for supporting the Commission through capacity building and Voter Education and Enlightenment.

In a Paper Presentation, the director Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Mary Nkem noted that Collaboration between the Media and INEC was not only vital towards upholding the democratic principles but that it would also foster public trust and confidence in the elections.

She also called on the journalists that would cover the forthcoming Governorship elections in Kogi,Bayelsa and Imo States to work in accordance with the ethics of the profession in the interest of public peace.
