India to Boost Investments in Nigeria’s Agriculture and ICT

India has committed to strengthening investments in Nigeria’s agriculture and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors. The goal is to boost food security and digital skills, alongside contributions to education, health, and other critical areas. This pledge followed robust discussions between President Bola Tinubu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who concluded a historic two-day state visit to Nigeria, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, Indian Secretary Dammu Ravi emphasized the comprehensive nature of the bilateral talks. Discussions covered trade, investment, defense, security, education, and health, among other areas. He noted that the India-Nigeria relationship is anchored on significant economic cooperation, with approximately 200 Indian companies investing $27 billion in Nigeria, creating jobs, and building capacity through scholarships and digital education initiatives.

“The two leaders explored ways to deepen strategic partnerships, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, railways, and development cooperation,” Ravi stated. He highlighted the importance of collaboration on food security, mechanization, and research in seed production to address global challenges within the framework of the Global South.

Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri G. Balasubramanian, reiterated the potential for expanded collaboration in manufacturing and emerging areas like irrigation services, hybrid seed development, and climate-resistant crops. He also identified mining, small and medium enterprises, and skill development as promising areas of cooperation.

Both leaders further addressed global and regional issues, emphasizing their shared commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South on the global stage. Ravi noted the mutual benefits of partnerships in energy, renewable energy, and digital technology to combat climate change.

The visit underscored the longstanding ties between India and Nigeria, including educational collaborations under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, which has provided Nigerian students with opportunities in both countries. Both nations aim to build on these discussions at the expert level to realize their shared goals.
