IMSU ASUU Commences Indefinite Strike Over Long-Standing Demands

The Imo State University (IMSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun an indefinite strike in a bid to address long-standing grievances.

In a joint statement, ASUU-IMSU Chairperson, Comrade Odinakachukwu Ejiogu, and Secretary, Comrade Lazarus Chikwendu, explained that the strike, effective from Monday, September 23, was a result of unresolved issues that have lingered for years.

“We are embarking on a total and comprehensive indefinite strike due to several unresolved issues, some dating back several years,” the statement read.

The union’s demands include the cessation of promotions without corresponding financial benefits since 2016, the elimination of salary disparities between IMSU staff and their counterparts in other tertiary institutions, the prompt assessment and promotion of staff, and the payment of salary arrears. The union also condemned selective salary payments.

The union noted that it had issued a 21-day ultimatum on July 18 to the university management to resolve these matters, but no satisfactory solution was reached, prompting the strike action.

Ejiogu urged the public to support the union, emphasizing that ASUU is fighting for justice and better conditions to secure a brighter future for the institution.
