Imo state, Nigeria–The Imo State Government has defended its recent decision to raise the minimum wage for civil servants to N104,000, affirming that the move is sustainable and supported by improved state finances.
Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma, addressed concerns over the increase during an interview on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief on Thursday.
Nwachuku emphasized that the wage adjustment is not a populist gesture but a well-calculated decision enabled by significant growth in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has surged from below N400 million to between N3 billion and N4 billion since the current administration took office. This progress, he explained, stems from efforts to curb financial leakages, digitize government operations, and foster a business-friendly environment for both local and foreign investors.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to long-term development, Nwachuku pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of 46 roads across Imo State, as evidence of prudent fiscal management. He also clarified that the new minimum wage will be reflected in the August 2025 salary payments, with further adjustments for other civil service categories phased in over the following months.
