IGP Probes Retired Officer’s ₦2m Pension Claim

Abuja, Nigeria: The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a comprehensive investigation into allegations raised by a retired Superintendent of Police who publicly rejected a ₦2 million retirement benefit, citing dissatisfaction with the payout.

In a viral video that has sparked widespread reactions, the retired officer, who served the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years and retired on October 1, 2023, voiced frustration over what he described as an unjustly low retirement package. He stated that the Police Pension Board had informed him that his total retirement entitlement amounted to ₦3 million — comprising ₦1 million in arrears since his retirement and ₦2 million as his full terminal benefit.

Responding to the development, the Force Headquarters, in a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the IGP has mandated NPF Pensions Limited to thoroughly review the matter. The directive includes verifying the claims, identifying any administrative shortcomings, and taking appropriate corrective measures.

“The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its retirees, many of whom dedicated their lives to safeguarding the nation,” the statement read. “The IGP considers the welfare of serving and retired officers a top priority, and recognises the importance of a reliable and adequate pension system in maintaining morale and institutional trust.”

Egbetokun acknowledged that while significant strides have been made in improving the pension structure, incidents such as this underscore the need for continued reform and accountability. He welcomed constructive feedback from stakeholders and the public, emphasising its role in shaping better policies.

The IGP further reassured officers, both active and retired, along with their families, of the Force’s ongoing commitment to strengthening welfare provisions and building a pension system that truly reflects the sacrifices made in service to the nation.

He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and patient as the investigation progresses and assured that the Force, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is working to find lasting and just solutions.
