The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to thoroughly investigate the death of a 35-year-old man, Jimoh Abdulquadri, who died while in police custody in Kwara State.
This directive was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed that the IGP also paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased.
During the visit, the IGP, accompanied by senior police officers, met with the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Sadiq Atiku Fulani, who represented the family. The IGP expressed deep sympathy and pledged that the investigation would be impartial and exhaustive.
“The IGP assured the family that no effort will be spared in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement read. “He has directed the FCID to ensure the case is handled with the highest level of diligence and professionalism, reflecting the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, respect for human rights, and justice.”
Preliminary reports indicate that Abdulquadri, who passed away in the early hours of Friday, had been detained since December 19, 2024. His arrest reportedly stemmed from an alleged debt of N220,000 owed to an individual identified as Peter.
The family of the deceased has accused officers at the Kwara State Police Command headquarters of subjecting Abdulquadri to physical abuse while in custody, which they believe contributed to his death.
The IGP reiterated that the Force remains committed to upholding justice and maintaining public trust in its operations.
