Ife, Nigeria — Yoruba activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has issued an apology to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, for statements he made during a recent visit to the Ooni of Ife’s palace.
In a video released Saturday, Igboho rejected allegations that he insulted the Alaafin, explaining that his words were part of his family’s traditional praise chant.
He expressed deep respect for the Alaafin, describing him as a significant Yoruba monarch and insisted he had no intention of offending him.
Igboho clarified that references to the Alaafin lacking a crown were not insults but elements of the eulogy well-known to the Alaafin.
“My father, Olugbon, told me the Alaafin felt I insulted him, but I wasn’t insulting him,” Igboho said. “If corrected, I would amend immediately.”
He stated his goal was to foster peace and harmony among Yoruba rulers rather than provoke discord.
The Ooni of Ife was also praised by Igboho as a peaceful leader who received his praise at the palace without objection.
“No benefit comes from disrespecting the Alaafin,” Igboho added. “What I seek is unity among all our kings. Please forgive me; I would never disrespect you.”
