The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) has called for legislation to make the use of life jackets mandatory for all boat passengers.
During a stakeholders’ meeting on the agency’s Youth Transformation Programme (YTP) in Ilorin on Thursday, HYPPADEC Managing Director Abubakar Yelwa urged state Houses of Assembly in affected areas to pass such laws to reduce fatalities from boat accidents in riverine communities. Represented by the Director of Community and Rural Development, Dr. Mahmud Muhammed, Yelwa highlighted a tragic incident where a riverine community lost 130 people in a single boat accident.
Yelwa also noted that HYPPADEC has trained over 5,000 youths under its YTP scheme. In Kwara State alone, 800 youths will soon receive starter packs to begin their own businesses and potentially employ others. The starter packs, which cost over ₦255 million, cover training in 15 vocations, including tailoring and fish farming.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the starter packs wisely and not to sell them, emphasizing their potential to improve livelihoods and promote economic development.
