Hunger Strike: Tinubu speech sparks mixed reactions.

The #EndBadGovernance protest organizers have called for the release of 1,150 protesters who were reportedly arrested by the police during the initial three days of the nationwide demonstrations.

Following President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday morning broadcast urging an end to the protests that have resulted in multiple fatalities, organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest—Take It Back Movement, Youth Rights Campaign, and the Creative Change Centre—have pledged to continue their demonstrations. In interviews with The dnews on Sunday, they criticized Tinubu for not addressing their demands. Tinubu had called for dialogue and an immediate halt to the nationwide protests, which have been ongoing since Thursday, with primarily young protesters marching across various states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to demand an end to “bad governance” and economic hardship.

Tear gas and gunshots were used to disperse protesters and journalists in Abuja on Saturday, resulting in several arrests. The protest has seen reported lootings by hoodlums in Kano, Kaduna, and other northern states, with police efforts to recover stolen items.

President Tinubu stated his administration is ready to address the protesters’ concerns, acknowledging their grievances. He expressed sympathy for the families of those who died or lost property due to the clashes and lootings. Tinubu urged protesters to suspend further demonstrations and open a dialogue, emphasizing the need for unity across all divides to reshape the nation’s destiny. He assured protesters that their voices have been heard and their pain understood, and the government is committed to addressing their issues.

“We must not allow violence and destruction to divide our nation. Together, we can build a future where every Nigerian enjoys dignity and prosperity. Don’t let anyone mislead you about your country or convince you that your government doesn’t care.”

In response, Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back movement, stated that the group will continue to rally support for the protests and demand the unconditional release of detained protesters.
