Dr. Maymunah Kadiri, a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and Medical Director of Pinnacle Medical Services in Lagos, has identified social media as a significant factor contributing to the rising cases of depression and suicide, particularly among young people.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr. Kadiri explained that social media often promotes an unrealistic picture of a perfect life, leaving many individuals, especially idle youths, feeling inadequate and restless.

“Social media has no rules or regulations to curtail how people use it or what direction they follow. Many youths get carried away by the perfect images and narratives they see online, which leads to depression,” she said.
Dr. Kadiri noted that environmental factors, relationship challenges, life struggles, and poor parenting also exacerbate mental health issues. She stressed that excessive time spent on social media significantly affects mental well-being, as people grow addicted to their phones and fail to distinguish between exaggerated online portrayals and reality.
The psychiatrist highlighted the urgent need for massive education campaigns to raise awareness of the potential effects of social media. “We need to teach society that not everything seen online is real. When people know better, they will do better for themselves and society,” she advised.
She also pointed out that the internet provides access to harmful information, including methods for committing suicide, thereby increasing social vices. While acknowledging the benefits of social media as a technological innovation, Dr. Kadiri urged users to approach it with caution and balance.
“Social media should reflect both strengths and weaknesses, not just exaggerated achievements,” she concluded, advocating for a more responsible use of these platforms to improve mental health outcomes.
