Chairman of the House committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikeangwuonu Ugochinyere, says that the House of Representatives is committed to amending the act that established the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).
He stated this when he visited the NEITI office in Abuja.
This amendment will ensure that NEITI functions optimally and has the power to prosecute offenders in the Petroleum industry. The committee also plans to ensure that NEITI receives sufficient funding to perform its duties effectively, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for transparency. Mr Ugochinyere noted.
Mr Ugochinyere explained that the committee will work with NEITI to ensure that the information and data released by the agency is put to use to reposition the Petroleum industry.
“We assure you of our readiness to propose legislation that gives NEITI stronger powers to discharge its responsibilities,” he said.
The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, thanked the lawmakers for their renewed commitment towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the oil and gas as well as the solid minerals sectors.
He said that it is the duty of NASS to use the data and information provided by NEITI to hold government functionaries accountable, and requested that the reports be debated in the plenary as soon as they are published.
Dr. Orji urged the committee to assist NEITI get its Board on stream as soon as possible in line with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI’s standard for revalidation.
