Nigeria: The House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in its quest to tackle the menace of fake vehicle number plates in Nigeria
This endorsement comes on the heels of the FRSC’s report, which revealed a staggering 7,798 arrests linked to number plate offenses within a two-month period.
According to Abiodun Adesida, Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, the House is committed to enacting legislation that will empower the FRSC to effectively address fake vehicle registrations. Adesida emphasized the growing threat posed by fake number plates to public safety and national security, necessitating urgent action.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, briefed the committee on the commission’s efforts to combat the issue, despite resistance from vehicle owners using fake plates. Mohammed highlighted the FRSC’s focus on enhancing the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal to prevent vehicles with fraudulent registrations from operating on Nigerian roads.
The FRSC has been actively tackling number plate violations, with personnel impounding at least 60 vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on February 3 alone. Additionally, the Taskforce Committee on the Retrieval of Government Official Number-Plates confiscated over 100 official number plates from unauthorized individuals in January.
