Hold Governors Accountable for Economic Issues – APC

Nigerians should hold state governors responsible for the current economic challenges, according to the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Okocha emphasized the need for accountability from state leaders.

Okocha questioned the rationale behind the planned protests, urging Nigerians to focus on the role of their governors in economic issues. He noted that despite increased monthly allocations, citizens are still facing hardships.

“What are the reasons for the planned protests? We need to ask why there is hunger despite the removal of fuel subsidies bringing money into the system. The President did not pocket this money; it was distributed. Those behind these protests are politicians seeking power through the backdoor. They should wait until 2027 if they want to challenge the APC,” Okocha stated.

He also cautioned against comparing Nigeria’s situation with that of Kenya or Sudan, highlighting the differing circumstances and economic indicators.

Addressing rumors, Okocha clarified that the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, does not control the APC in Rivers State.

Various economic sectors and civil society groups have urged Nigerians to reconsider the planned protests. The “Door to Door Women and Youth Initiative for Good Governance” warned against organizing nationwide demonstrations, stressing the potential destabilizing effects.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appealed to the protest sponsors to reconsider, stating that the government is addressing the issues at hand. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, pointed out the recent approval of the National Minimum Wage by the National Assembly as evidence of the government’s commitment to resolving citizens’ concerns.

Idris urged the youth to give the President more time to implement his plans for the nation’s benefit.
