Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has raised concerns about the influence of Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, over the spending drama unfolding on Capitol Hill.
Clinton’s remarks come amidst House Democrats’ accusations that far-right Republicans aligned with the “Extreme MAGA” movement are pushing the country towards a government shutdown.
In a social media post, Clinton pointed out that the Republican Party, allegedly taking cues from Musk, is heading towards a government shutdown during the holiday season.
She highlighted the implications of such a shutdown, including the suspension of paychecks for military personnel and essential nutrition benefits for low-income families, just before Christmas.
Reports from Fox News suggest that the U.S. government faces the prospect of a partial shutdown at midnight on Saturday if lawmakers fail to reach a viable deal to extend government funding deadlines until March and continue spending at 2024 levels.
Musk reportedly opposed the initial spending agreement negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson with Democrats and threatened to support primary challenges against Republicans who supported it.
In response, House Republicans presented a revised version of the spending bill, which included provisions for disaster aid and a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling, aligned with the preferences of President-elect Donald Trump.
However, the revised measure failed to secure enough support in the House, with some Republicans withholding their backing and Democrats rejecting it. Many Democrats expressed dissatisfaction with Musk’s perceived influence in the legislative process.
