Heavy Rain Claims Fifty Lives in Afghanistan

At least 50 people have died due to severe rain and flooding in central Afghanistan, an official reported on Saturday.

Mawlawi Abdul Hai Zaeem, head of the information department for Ghor province, told Reuters that there is no information on the number of injured from the rainstorm that began on Friday, which also disrupted many key roads in the area.

Zaeem noted that 2,000 houses were completely destroyed, 4,000 partially damaged, and over 2,000 shops were submerged in the province’s capital, Feroz-Koh.

This follows last week’s flash floods in northern Afghanistan, which killed 315 people and injured more than 1,600, according to authorities.

Additionally, the Afghan defense ministry reported that an Afghan Air Force helicopter crashed on Wednesday due to “technical issues” during recovery operations in Ghor province, resulting in one death and 12 injuries.

Afghanistan has faced a significant aid shortfall since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, which led to a reduction in development aid that had been crucial for government finances. The situation has deteriorated further as international attention is diverted to other global crises and in response to the Taliban’s restrictive policies on Afghan women.
