The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has taken a significant step towards fostering advocacy for disability rights by initiating the formation of a five-member committee tasked with crafting a comprehensive framework.
In a statement released by Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, it was revealed that the directive to establish the committee was issued during a meeting held on Wednesday between the Minister and Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in Abuja.
During the encounter, the Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the specific needs of persons with disabilities to ensure the realization of their aspirations. He underscored his commitment to providing the necessary support through the public information channels within his ministry, aimed at safeguarding the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities.
Alhaji Idris further asserted the administration’s dedication to social inclusion, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering resolve to accord visibility, recognition, and responsibility to persons with disabilities in governance.
Assuring equitable representation, the Minister pledged to advocate for the adoption of Disability Laws by state governors, emphasizing the administration’s determination not to leave any segment of the Nigerian population behind.
He emphasized the invaluable contributions of the 35 million people living with disabilities, emphasizing their unique perspectives, talents, and experiences, which stand to enrich the implementation of the forthcoming National Values Charter.
In response, Dr. James Lalu reiterated the importance of collaboration in raising awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities. He emphasized the necessity for service providers to ensure equal access to facilities, such as public buildings, transportation, and healthcare, without discrimination, as mandated by sections of the Disability Law.
Dr. Lalu emphasized the untapped potential inherent in persons with disabilities, highlighting their diverse skills, qualifications, and abilities, which are integral to the economic advancement of the nation.
