Gaza City, Palestine — Hamas has halted the planned release of Israeli hostages, citing Israel’s alleged failure to uphold ceasefire commitments, further complicating ongoing negotiations.
The announcement, made by Al-Qassam Brigades spokesperson Abu Obaida via Telegram, stated that the scheduled release, set for Saturday, would be postponed indefinitely.
“The handover of the Zionist prisoners set for Saturday will not proceed until further notice, pending the occupation’s fulfillment of its obligations from past weeks,” Obaida declared. “We remain committed to the agreement as long as Israel does the same.”
Hamas and Israel are currently observing a six-week ceasefire, part of a mediated deal under which Hamas has been gradually releasing hostages captured during its October 7, 2023, attack in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees.
Since the truce began last month, both parties have conducted five rounds of prisoner exchanges, leading to the release of 21 Israeli hostages and over 730 Palestinian prisoners. However, the fate of the remaining exchanges remains uncertain, with negotiations ongoing amid persistent tensions.
While the initial phases of the agreement have proceeded, the latest disruption raises concerns over its sustainability. Talks are expected to continue as mediators attempt to prevent a breakdown in the fragile ceasefire.
