Gunmen Kill Youth Leader, Rob Congregants in Imo Church Attack

Gunmen attacked God’s Doing Healing and Deliverance Ministry in Orodo, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on Saturday, killing Samuel Ogbonna, a youth leader and close aide to the church’s General Overseer, Evangelist Maduabuchi Ernest, also known as “Dibia Ekpere” or “Father MEMC.”

Ogbonna, who also owned a local restaurant and bar, was fatally shot during the violent incident. A source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the assailants, numbering around eight, arrived at the church in two vehicles—a red Highlander and a black Lexus sedan—around 4 p.m. during a service.

The attackers demanded to see the General Overseer, but when informed he was not present, they became enraged. They forced the congregation to lie face down while they stole personal belongings, including phones, bags, and cash.

“I have never witnessed anything like this,” the source said. “When they couldn’t find the Pastor, they made us lie down and took our belongings before leaving the compound.”

As they were leaving, the gunmen opened fire, fatally wounding Ogbonna, who had attempted to hide in nearby bushes after running errands. Additionally, two congregants, a man and a nursing mother, were kidnapped but later released along the Owerri-Orlu Expressway. The attackers also stole the General Overseer’s vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The incident has left the Orodo community in a state of fear, with many residents fleeing the area for their safety, and the church has since been locked.
