Burkina Faso – President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Thursday night, according to sources close to the government.
The attack, which occurred during one of the president’s routine movements in the capital, was met with swift intervention by security forces, who successfully repelled the assailants and secured Traoré’s safety.
While the presidential office is yet to release an official statement, an investigation is reportedly underway. This marks another in a series of threats against the 36-year-old leader, who came to power following a military coup in September 2022.
Traoré, known for his anti-corruption stance and pan-African rhetoric, has repeatedly emphasized Africa’s potential to thrive without Western dependency. His administration, however, has faced growing tension due to insurgent attacks and political opposition.
Analysts warn that this latest incident reflects the fragile security situation in Burkina Faso, a nation grappling with jihadist violence and internal unrest. Observers are awaiting a national address from the president as concerns grow over the country’s stability.
