Twenty-eight civil society organizations in the Niger Delta region are demanding clarification regarding reports that suggest the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has been cleared by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The groups are concerned that such a clearance could potentially tarnish the reputation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which has pledged to fight corruption.
In a statement signed by their spokesperson, Comrade Emmanuel Gabriel Abela, the organizations raised questions about the credibility of the EFCC’s decision to clear Edu, particularly in light of allegations related to the approval of flight fares for Ministry staff traveling to Kogi State, an area that does not have an operational airport.
Edu was suspended in January amid allegations of misappropriating approximately N585 million, prompting concerns about her management of ministry resources.
The groups emphasized that their concerns are based on the allegations of corruption and not personal animosity towards Edu. They called for transparency and a public explanation from the EFCC regarding the grounds for Edu’s clearance, particularly in relation to the approval of travel expenses to a region without an airport.
The organizations stressed the importance of transparency in addressing serious allegations of corruption to build trust in the government and its institutions.
They warned that failure to provide clear and transparent explanations could lead to nationwide protests to hold the government and the EFCC accountable.
