Group Urges Tinubu to Lift State of Emergency in Rivers Ahead of Democracy Day

Abuja, Nigeria — The Enforcers of Good Governance (EGG), a prominent socio-political advocacy group in Rivers State, has called on President Bola Tinubu to lift the state of emergency currently imposed on the state, describing such an action as both symbolic and pragmatic ahead of the upcoming June 12 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, June 9, 2025, and signed by the group’s National Convener, Dr. Kingsley Ogu, the organisation said the appeal was among resolutions adopted at an expanded stakeholders’ meeting held the same day in Rivers.

Dr. Ogu noted that rescinding the emergency declaration would not only reflect progress in the reconciliation process but also serve as a significant gesture to reaffirm democratic values.

“The Enforcers of Good Governance, under the leadership of our National Convener, Dr. Kingsley Ogu, convened an expanded stakeholders meeting on Monday in Rivers State, following the declaration by our National Leader in Abuja. This aligns with our commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and strategic plans ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement read.

Ogu reiterated the group’s unwavering support for President Tinubu, praising his “bold leadership, democratic principles, and statesmanlike intervention” in resolving the Rivers political crisis. He said the President’s decisive actions have calmed tensions and opened the door to long-term stability in the state.

“In light of the positive strides toward peace and dialogue, we respectfully appeal to Mr. President to lift the state of emergency as a commemorative act for June 12. It would mark a symbolic return to normalcy and serve as a gift to Nigerians on Democracy Day,” he said.

The meeting drew participation from coordinators across all 23 Local Government Areas, women leaders, social media influencers, and student representatives from seven institutions in Rivers. According to Ogu, the group unanimously pledged their support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 and committed to mobilising support from the grassroots.

He added that the EGG is set to launch a nationwide door-to-door sensitisation campaign aimed at promoting civic awareness, showcasing the achievements of the Tinubu administration, and encouraging deeper public engagement ahead of the next general elections.

“Our mission is to take the message of good governance and national unity directly to the people—household by household,” Ogu emphasized.

He called on fellow Nigerians, civil society organisations, and political actors to join EGG’s efforts to protect democratic gains and work toward a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
