“Governors Rally Behind State Police Establishment in Response to Rising Insecurity”

Amid mounting concerns over security challenges, sixteen state governors have thrown their weight behind the implementation of state police, as disclosed during the 140th session of the National Economic Council convened at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, under the stewardship of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

According to Stanley Nkwocha, the Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communications, reports endorsing the establishment of state police were tendered by the governors, marking a significant step toward addressing the nation’s security quagmire.

During the session, presided over by Vice President Shettima, the Secretary to NEC, Nebeolisa Anako, presented the submissions from various states, advocating for constitutional amendments to facilitate the creation of state police forces.

While specifics regarding supporting states were not disclosed, assurances were given that a comprehensive compilation would be unveiled in subsequent NEC meetings, indicating ongoing efforts in this regard.

This development echoes previous calls by governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and various regional socio-political groups, including Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum, and the Northern Elders’ Forum, who have consistently emphasized the imperative of state police as a viable solution to Nigeria’s security woes, evoking comparisons to the situation in Venezuela.
