Governor Fubara Denies Legitimacy to Rivers Assembly Members Amid Political Crisis

Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has asserted that the current members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, no longer hold the status of lawmakers.

Addressing the issue during a courtesy visit from the Bayelsa State delegation of political and traditional leaders, led by former governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday evening, Governor Fubara emphasized his commitment to resolving the ongoing political crisis in the state through peaceful means.

Fubara recounted attending numerous reconciliation meetings in an effort to amicably resolve the discord, yet lamented the failure of the opposing faction, to which the state’s lawmakers belong, to embrace the resolutions proposed.

Expressing his stance as a peacemaker, Governor Fubara underscored his dedication to preserving a conducive environment for sustainable development and fostering constructive political relationships within the state.

He affirmed, “I have always taken the path of peace. I have shown respect. I’ve subjected myself to every meeting of reconciliation for peace. And what happens, each time we come out from such meetings, we are faced with one thunder or lightning.”

Reflecting on his governance approach, Governor Fubara highlighted his aspiration to build upon the developmental groundwork laid by past leaders, notably former governor Nyesom Wike, refraining from political confrontations amidst pressing state responsibilities.

In a bid to clarify the prevailing situation, Governor Fubara declared, “Let me say it here, those group of men who claim that they are Assembly members, they are not existing. I want it to be on record.”

He elaborated further, stating, “Their existence and whatever they have been doing is because I allowed them to do so. If I don’t recognize them, they are nowhere, that is the truth.”

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, leading the Bayelsa State delegation, expressed solidarity with Governor Fubara and the people of Rivers State, advocating for peace, reconciliation, and political maturity amidst the ongoing crisis for the advancement of stability and development in the region.
