Maiduguri, Nigeria — Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has been unanimously appointed as the new Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, signaling a pivotal shift in leadership aimed at advancing regional development and security.
Buni succeeded Governor Ildjima Abdraman of Hadjer Lamis Province, Chad Republic, during the Forum’s 5th session, held at the Muhammadu Indimi Learning Centre, University of Maiduguri, Borno State. The unanimous endorsement reflects confidence in Buni’s leadership capabilities amidst ongoing regional challenges.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him, pledging to strengthen cooperation among member states to address key issues such as insecurity, climate change, and economic inequality.
He acknowledged the critical role of global partners like the United Nations, Lake Chad Basin Commission, and African Union Commission in supporting recovery and development initiatives in the region.
Themed ‘Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,’ the Forum highlighted the urgent need to tackle insurgency, poverty, and environmental degradation affecting millions of residents.
Buni’s leadership tenure is anticipated to foster lasting peace and drive sustainable development, creating a more stable and prosperous Lake Chad Basin region.
