Akure, Nigeria — Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender, Tosin Demehin, with a ₦30 million cash reward and a house for her stellar performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The announcement was made on Monday during a civic reception held in Akure to celebrate Ondo State indigenes who played vital roles in Nigeria’s victorious WAFCON campaign.
Demehin, who hails from Ilaje Local Government Area, was commended by the Governor as a “symbol of talent, discipline, and resilience.” Aiyedatiwa praised her outstanding contribution to the Super Falcons’ continental triumph, describing her as a source of immense pride to the state.
“This is a proud moment for us. Tosin Demehin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile,” the Governor declared.
In addition to Demehin, Aiyedatiwa also gifted ₦15 million each to Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team secretary—both indigenes of Ondo’s southern senatorial district—for their vital support roles in the national team’s success.
“You have not only brought glory to the nation, but you have honoured Ondo State,” he remarked, while reaffirming his administration’s dedication to youth development and sports promotion. “We will continue to invest in young talents and provide them with the resources to excel—especially in sports.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa further pledged renewed support for Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, assuring fans of the government’s commitment to the club’s return to the premier league.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recognizing the Super Falcons at the national level, adding that such gestures uplift the spirit of athletes across Nigeria.
In her response, Demehin expressed deep gratitude to the Governor and the people of Ondo State for the warm reception and generous support.
“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me,” she said. “As a former Sunshine Queens player, I know there is massive potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls with dreams like mine.”
She called on key stakeholders to intensify efforts towards developing women’s football in the state, emphasizing that “the growth of Nigerian football—both male and female—is a shared responsibility.”
