The Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr. Chris Maiyaki, has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to trust in the current administration’s ability to fulfill its commitments. Mr. Maiyaki made this appeal in Abuja during a media briefing with Education Correspondents from Nigeria’s capital.
Mr. Maiyaki stated that the Federal Government is actively working to address ASUU’s demands, including the reconstitution and inauguration of governing councils for universities. He assured that progress is being made in this regard, with a local organizing committee already established by the government for the purpose of reconstitution.
Highlighting the government’s efforts, Mr. Maiyaki emphasized initiatives undertaken by the NUC to enhance the university system. These initiatives include the introduction of core curriculum minimum academic standards (CCMAS), guidelines for e-learning, and guidelines for trans-national education.
Mr. Maiyaki underscored the significance of the CCMAS in aligning Nigeria with the goal of a knowledge-driven economy, aimed at equipping graduates with 21st-century skills. Additionally, he outlined various guidelines introduced by the NUC, such as those for trans-national education, e-learning, and the implementation of the National Policy on Open Educational Resources.
Furthermore, Mr. Maiyaki disclosed the establishment of a comprehensive repository for universities, facilitating data collection on student-lecturer ratios and other pertinent metrics. This repository, he explained, enables the government to formulate informed policies and strategies at the tertiary education level.
