Gombe state, Nigeria:The Gombe State Police Command has implemented a series of strict security protocols designed to enhance public safety during festive seasons, mass gatherings, and other public events across the state.
State Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, announced in a statement that the possession and public display of dangerous weapons—including knives, cutlasses, machetes, daggers, and clubs—have been banned statewide. This initiative aims to reduce violence linked to local gang conflicts, particularly those involving the “Kalare” group.
Commissioner Yahaya emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution and criminal statutes prohibit the illegal possession of offensive weapons. He warned that the police command will adopt a zero-tolerance stance against any actions that threaten peace and security.
Alongside the weapons ban, new regulations on motorcycle operations have been introduced. Motorcycles are now prohibited from operating between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM daily. Additionally, riders are restricted to carrying only one passenger, and the use of truck-style or excessively loud horns is now forbidden.
Law enforcement officers have been instructed to enforce these rules rigorously, with violators subject to arrest and prosecution. The police command called on traditional rulers, community leaders, event organisers, parents, and the Motorcycle Riders Association to collaborate on awareness campaigns and ensure adherence to the new regulations.
Members of the public have also been urged to report any suspicious behaviour or breaches of the guidelines to the nearest police station promptly.
