Burna Boy, the Afrobeats star, is set to perform on Glastonbury’s renowned Pyramid Stage on Sunday evening, marking a pivotal moment in his career.
This follows remarkable performances by Ayra Starr and Tems on the Pyramid and Other Stages, respectively, on Saturday.
Afrobeats, originating from West Africa, has rapidly gained global recognition, with Spotify reporting a 1,200% increase in the genre’s popularity since 2017, according to a BBC report.
With Afrobeats artists now headlining the UK’s largest festival, the genre has clearly reached a new milestone. “It’s our time,” Ayra Starr told BBC News. “It’s been a long time coming, and we deserve this.”
Afrobeats (with an “s”) should not be confused with Afrobeat (without an “s”), a genre from the 1960s–70s pioneered by Fela Kuti, who blended African rhythms with funk, jazz, and highlife.
Notably, Fela Kuti performed at Glastonbury in 1984, and his son Femi Kuti continued the legacy by playing on the Pyramid Stage this year.
