Germany’s Government donates €20m for Niger Basin Authority’s development

The German government has donated 20 million euros to member countries of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) to promote efficient usage of water and enhance adaptation to climate change.

The Head of the Political Section, German Embassy, Mathias Dold stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at this year’s session of the Regional Steering Committee of NBA Projects.

Mathias Dold said the 20 million euros expected to run in 2024 were borne out of the need to promote better coordination in the Niger Basin Authority.

”German government has already supported the Niger Basin Authority in the last few years with an amount of around 4 million euros, and on top of that, the new project is about to start, which will begin in 2024. And this project will be funded with 20 million euros for better coordination within the Niger Basin countries and to make sure that the waters are used properly and that the adaptation to climate change is done in good ways so that people can make the best use of water.”

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would ensure that the objectives of the basin became a reality.

Prof Ustev maintained that member countries have over the years shown a strong political will to protect their common heritage and urged them to use the event to develop better strategies to implement all its programmes and projects.

”Your presence in Abuja despite your busy schedule is evidence of your commitment to the development of our common heritage, the Niger Basin, and I will like to urge you to propose relevant actions to facilitate the implementation of various projects and programmes for the benefit of our people in view of the changing environment in our best interest.

The Executive Secretary of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), Abderahim Bireme Hamid appreciated the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Nigerian Government for their support so far, stating that though the basin had achieved a lot, the crisis in Niger has continued to affect its operation.

The Niger Basin Authority boss added that, despite the challenges, they have embarked on constructing new dams for the benefit of member states.
