Nigeria: The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on the Nigerian government to fence off key areas along the nation’s borders to combat the proliferation of small arms, light weapons, and other criminal elements
General Musa made this request during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
According to General Musa, Nigeria’s porous borders have significantly contributed to the influx of illicit weapons, exacerbating the country’s security challenges. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility among relevant authorities to secure the borders, highlighting the importance of advanced border technologies that can detect and respond to threats. The Chairman of the House Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Aliyu Misau, reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to addressing the issue through comprehensive awareness campaigns and legislative support. Nigeria shares approximately 4,047 kilometers of borders with neighboring countries, with numerous illegal entry points facilitating the influx of illicit weapons.
