Lagos, Nigeria — The Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Board, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, has commended the agency’s management for their ongoing efforts to enhance the nation’s airports despite existing challenges.
During a recent visit to FAAN’s headquarters and an inspection tour of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Alhaji Ganduje expressed satisfaction with the facilities, equipment, and infrastructure improvements he observed. However, he acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly regarding abandoned projects and outdated equipment.
“We have seen that some projects awarded many years ago remain unfinished, but not due to the present management, but as a result of rising costs over time. Additionally, some equipment initially installed has become obsolete due to advancements in modern technology,” he stated.
Despite these setbacks, Ganduje expressed confidence in FAAN’s leadership, praising the agency’s commitment to addressing these concerns.
“FAAN is fortunate to have a competent managing director and a team of dedicated professionals. There are challenges, but I have seen a strong sense of motivation and a drive to overcome them. We have already begun discussions on how to resolve these issues,” he added.
Security and Passenger Experience Enhancements
Providing updates on security measures, FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, highlighted several new initiatives aimed at improving safety.
“We have deployed explosive detection devices to ensure a safer and more secure environment for passengers and staff. Additionally, we are undergoing significant renovations to enhance the overall passenger experience,” she revealed.
She further explained that FAAN is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to implement an enhanced safety policy. Key improvements include the rehabilitation of airport terminals, renovations of VIP facilities, and upgrades to ensure better accessibility for passengers with disabilities.
Looking ahead, Mrs. Kuku outlined FAAN’s strategic objectives for 2025, which include:
– The recertification of Kano and Port Harcourt airports.
– The rehabilitation of runways and terminal buildings.
– A focus on cost recovery and enhancing passenger experience to provide a more seamless and comfortable journey for travelers.
While acknowledging that more work needs to be done, she remained optimistic about the progress so far.
“We are beginning to see positive changes. Passenger feedback has been encouraging, though we recognize that we still have a long way to go,” she concluded.
