Abuja, Nigeria — The management team of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) is undertaking a one-week study tour of Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to enhance its capacity to provide accurate and reliable data for The Gambia.
The Statistician General of GBoS, Mr. Nyakassi Sanyang, explained that the decision to visit Nigeria’s NBS was highly recommended by international development partners, including the World Bank. The study tour focuses on key statistical initiatives such as the Labour Force Survey and the Agricultural Census.
Highlighting the need for modernization, Mr. Sanyang noted that Gambia’s last agricultural census, conducted manually, took place in 2011. He emphasized the importance of adopting advanced technologies for efficient data collection and analysis.
“Nigeria’s statistical expertise and capacity offer an invaluable opportunity for The Gambia to learn and implement best practices that will drive our nation’s development,” Sanyang stated. He lauded Nigeria’s leadership in statistical development across Africa and expressed optimism about the collaboration.
Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, Statistician General of the Federation and CEO of Nigeria’s NBS, assured the Gambian delegation of full support in leveraging emerging technologies for data production.
He credited the Nigerian government for creating an enabling environment that promotes high-quality data generation using innovative and globally recognized methodologies. Prince Adeniran also highlighted Nigeria’s growing role as a hub for statistical collaboration within the region.
“Nigeria’s expertise has attracted similar visits from Sierra Leone and training programs for other West African countries,” Prince Adeniran said, expressing confidence that such knowledge-sharing initiatives will enhance statistical capacity across the continent.
The Gambian delegation’s visit underscores a broader commitment to regional cooperation and capacity building, which are vital for generating accurate data that informs sustainable development and policy-making.
