The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo State has reported that it has rescued six survivors and recovered two bodies after a bus crashes into the Ovia River.
According to Cyril Mathew, the Edo Sector Commander of the FRSC, the rescue operation began on Thursday evening when the accident occurred.
Mathew told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that six people were rescued alive on Thursday, while one body was recovered on the same day. Another body was recovered on Friday.
Mathew expressed concerns that the chances of survival for the remaining passengers trapped in the river are slim, given the time that has elapsed since the accident.
The FRSC has engaged divers to assist in the recovery of the bodies, but negotiations are ongoing, with the divers requesting N2 million to carry out the operation.
The accident occurred on Thursday at approximately 4:20 pm when a bus traveling from Lagos to Port Harcourt experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control.
In an attempt to avoid colliding with other vehicles, the driver veered into the opposite lane, crossing from the Ore-Benin-Lagos route to the Benin-Ore road.
However, due to the speed of the vehicle, the driver was unable to regain control, resulting in the bus crashing into a pavement and plunging into the river.
