Abuja, Nigeria– A total of 250 commercial drivers have received specialised training in emergency rescue and first aid for road crash victims during a capacity-building exercise held at the Jabi Central Motor Park in Abuja.
The training initiative was organised by the Hospital Emergency Response Foundation (HERF) in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The programme aimed to enhance drivers’ and passengers’ capacity to provide immediate, life-saving assistance at accident scenes.
Speaking at the event, HERF Executive Director, Udanga Agam-Jarigbe, reiterated the foundation’s commitment to reducing road fatalities through strategic partnerships with transport unions, emergency agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
“This initiative will be scaled up across the country to reduce the tragic consequences of road crashes on Nigerian roads,” she said.
Also addressing participants, Isah Nzapisma, FRSC Head of Operations in the Federal Capital Territory, said the Corps is working closely with partners to achieve the United Nations Decade of Action goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by the year 2030.
He urged participants to apply the safety and rescue techniques learned during the training, while also discouraging reckless driving and the consumption of alcohol behind the wheel.
In his remarks, Labaran Ahman, an Assistant Director at NEMA, expressed concern over the growing trend of bystanders filming accident scenes rather than offering help. He assured that NEMA remains fully equipped and ready to respond to road emergencies nationwide.
