Akure, Ondo State — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo Sector Command has issued a stern warning to motorcyclists: riding on highways without crash helmets will lead to arrest, impoundment, and prosecution.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, State Sector Commander Dr. Samuel Ibitoye emphasized that failure to wear helmets drastically increases the risk of fatal injuries in crashes, often resulting in broken skulls and limbs.
He urged motorcyclists to avoid highways where possible but stressed that if riding on highways is unavoidable, strict helmet use and caution—especially around heavy vehicles—are mandatory.
“We are not only enforcing fines and impoundment but prioritizing helmet use and rider safety,” Dr. Ibitoye stated.
He made a special appeal to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and title-holders to set examples by wearing helmets, cautioning that crashes do not discriminate by status or religion.
“Titles or turbans do not protect you from accidents. If you must ride, wear your helmet or choose safer transport,” he advised.
The FRSC’s intensified campaign aims to reduce motorcycle-related fatalities across Ondo State through increased enforcement and public awareness.
