The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has encouraged Nigerians to adopt bicycles as a mode of transportation.
This initiative was highlighted during a roadshow on major streets in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, and a sensitization event for students at a local private school, both held in celebration of the 2024 World Cycling Day.
FRSC Sector Commander in Rivers State, Christopher Kuje, emphasized that World Cycling Day, established by the United Nations, underscores the significance of bicycles. He noted that bicycles are an affordable mode of transport for both the wealthy and the less privileged and help reduce road congestion.
“Today, we are marking the United Nations’ World Cycling Day to highlight the importance of bicycles. We appreciate the Rivers State Cycling Association for their support. Despite the labour strike, we successfully conducted this event,” Kuje stated.
He detailed the day’s activities, including visits to Silver-Vallee Primary and Secondary School to educate students about the benefits of cycling, followed by a roadshow to Wave FM.
“We are celebrating bicycles for their unique advantages. They are accessible to everyone, reduce road traffic crashes by 70 to 80 percent, and help eliminate road obstructions,” Kuje added, noting that many European countries are promoting bicycle use for these reasons.
