Fraudsters Hijack Akwa Ibom Governor’s WhatsApp Number

The WhatsApp account of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reportedly been hacked and cloned by an unidentified fraudster, who is now using it to conduct fraudulent transactions worth millions of naira, according to reliable sources.

One such fraudulent attempt involved the impersonator messaging a close associate of the governor, requesting a sum of ₦7 million to be transferred to a designated account. The fraudster claimed the governor, who is currently in the United States for official duties, would reimburse the amount later. The intended recipient, however, grew suspicious and alerted other government officials to the potential scam.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, confirmed the incident, issuing a public warning to be vigilant against such fraudulent schemes. He emphasized that any requests for money using the governor’s WhatsApp number should be disregarded as they are not legitimate.

“Our attention has been drawn to a meticulously planned fraud, where some criminal elements have cloned the WhatsApp number of His Excellency, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, with the aim of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public,” Udoh stated. “We urge the public to ignore any such solicitations, as they are not from the governor.”

He added that law enforcement agencies have been notified and are actively pursuing the individuals responsible for this malicious act.
