Benin City, Nigeria — Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been arrested over the alleged murder of Bolt driver Henry Osarodion in Benin City.
Members of the e-hailing drivers’ association staged a protest at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), demanding justice and a thorough police investigation.
Association spokesperson Festus Nwabuzor stated that Osarodion had dropped a passenger at Castle Hotel when he nearly collided with an NSCDC officer. The officer allegedly assaulted him, detained him at the NSCDC office on Off-Limit Road from midnight until 5 p.m., leading to his tragic death.
The protesters called for a review of CCTV footage and urged the Edo State government to intervene, aligning with its commitment to residents’ safety.
NSCDC, Police Respond
Speaking to Radio Nigeria, NSCDC Public Relations Officer Efosa Ogbebor claimed their officers were merely intervening in a fight when a mob attacked, forcing them to withdraw and transfer the case to the police.
Edo State Police spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu confirmed the arrests, stating that Commissioner of Police Betty Osetimeyin had ordered a full investigation.
He assured the public that justice would be served.
