Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube, has died at the age of 56 after a battle with lung cancer.
Wojcicki was instrumental in Google’s evolution from a search engine startup to a global technology powerhouse. She led YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006, for nearly a decade before stepping down last year to focus on her health, family, and personal endeavors.
Her journey with Google began in 1998, when she was working at Intel and provided her garage as the workspace for Google’s co-founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. In 1999, she became Google’s 16th employee and its first marketing manager.
During her time at Google, Wojcicki contributed to key projects, including the creation of image searches and the acquisitions of YouTube and DoubleClick, a leading ad platform.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai paid tribute to Wojcicki, acknowledging her significant contributions.
Appointed as YouTube’s CEO in 2014, Wojcicki guided the platform through its expansion, including the launch of its streaming television service. She also oversaw the company as it dealt with major challenges related to child privacy, hate speech, and misinformation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to her leadership in tech, Wojcicki was a strong advocate for paid parental leave, consistently championing the need for businesses to implement generous policies.
