Lviv, Ukraine — Andriy Parubiy, the former Speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, was fatally shot on Saturday in Lviv, prompting a large-scale manhunt for the assailant.
Authorities said the attacker, disguised as a courier, opened fire on Parubiy before fleeing the scene. Ukrainian police have launched a special operation dubbed “Siren” to locate the gunman.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing, describing it as a “terrible murder” and extending condolences to the bereaved family. He noted the attack seemed to be “very carefully planned.”
Lviv’s chief prosecutor, Mykola Meret, stated that all possible motives were being investigated, including potential Russian involvement.
Officials reported that about eight bullets were fired, with seven shell casings recovered. The gunman remains unidentified.
Parubiy, 54, served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019 and was a key figure in Ukraine’s 2013-14 pro-Western protests and democratic reforms. He also held a vital security role during the early stages of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The assassination has triggered widespread mourning and calls for justice across Ukraine and among its international allies.
