NETHERLAND – Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 11, 2025, at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport upon returning from Hong Kong. The arrest was executed by Philippine authorities in coordination with Interpol, based on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity linked to his controversial “war on drugs.”
During Duterte’s presidency from 2016 to 2022, his anti-narcotics campaign resulted in approximately 6,200 deaths, according to official police reports. However, human rights organizations estimate the actual death toll to be significantly higher, with many victims from urban poor communities killed under dubious circumstances.
Following his arrest, Duterte was transferred to the ICC’s custody in the Netherlands. This marks the first time a former Asian leader has been detained by the ICC. His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, has traveled to Amsterdam to assist with his legal case.
