Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for accepting $35 million in bribes from the Brazilian construction company, Odebrecht.
The bribes were in exchange for allowing Odebrecht to secure a contract to build a road connecting Peru to western Brazil.
Toledo, who served as president of Peru from 2001 to 2006, was arrested in California in 2019 and later extradited to Peru in 2023 to face the charges.Throughout the year-long trial, Toledo maintained his innocence, denying the money laundering and collusion accusations leveled against him.
The Odebrecht corruption scandal has also implicated two other former Peruvian presidents, Ollanta Humala and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who are currently under investigation in connection with the case.
