Former German President Horst Köhler Passes Away at 81

Berlin, Germany. —  Germany mourns the loss of Horst Köhler, former President of the Federal Republic, who passed away at the age of 81.

According to an official announcement from the German presidency, Köhler died on Saturday in Berlin following a brief but serious illness. His family was by his side during his final moments.

Köhler served as Germany’s President from 2004 until 2010. Prior to his presidency, he held several significant international roles, most notably as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 2000 and 2004.

His time in office came to an unexpected end when he resigned in 2010 amid public criticism over remarks concerning Germany’s military involvement abroad.

Born on February 22, 1943, in Skierbieszów, during Nazi occupation, Köhler was of German descent. His family resettled in Leipzig before fleeing to West Germany in 1953.

He spent his formative years in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, and later attended the University of Tübingen, where he earned a doctorate in economics in 1977 after studying economics and political science.

Köhler is remembered for his contributions to Germany’s international economic standing and his commitment to public service. His passing marks the end of an era for Germany.
