The Osun State Fire Service reported on Friday that five people died in a fatal accident involving a gas tanker and a commercial bus in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Earlier reports indicated that several commuters were trapped in the accident, which occurred on Thursday along the Ife/Ibadan Expressway. According to Kehinde Adeleke, the spokesperson for the Osun Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), about 17 people were on board the bus at the time of the collision.

Providing an update on Friday, Ibrahim Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, confirmed that five passengers, including two men, two women, and a toddler, were found dead in the wreckage. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife.

“On Thursday, September 12, 2024, a gas tanker collided with a commercial bus, locally known as ‘Sabo-Lagere,’ carrying an unspecified number of passengers. Both vehicles swerved off the road and into a ditch along the Ife/Ibadan Expressway, near Ajebandele, Ile-Ife,” Adekunle stated.

He added that the incident was reported to the Ile-Ife Zonal Command around noon, prompting a rapid response from the Fire Service and backup from the headquarters in Abere due to the presence of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) involved in the crash.

“After extensive efforts by the State Fire Service, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ile-Ife Zonal Command, led by SRC Kenny Olorundare, and local residents, the bodies of five passengers—two men, two women, and a toddler—were recovered from the wreckage and subsequently transported to the OAU Teaching Hospital morgue,” the statement read.

Describing the incident as both tragic and preventable, the Director of the Osun State Fire Service, Mr. Ismail Olaniyi, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the Ile-Ife community.
