At least five people have died, and numerous others have been hospitalized after eating a meal of beans served during a ‘love feast,’ locally known as ‘ipese,’ at a white garment church in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at a church located in the Apata area of Ido Local Government Area, according to The Punch.
Health authorities at the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo, Egbeda Local Government Area, where the affected individuals were treated, confirmed the deaths of five worshippers. They also stated that many more had been brought to the center for emergency medical attention.
An anonymous staff member at the Infectious Disease Centre disclosed that 50 of the victims who were rushed to the facility had been treated and discharged. “Some of the affected people were brought here for treatment. So far, 50 have been discharged, while others are still receiving care,” the source said.
The incident was also confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, Adewale Osifeso, who noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
While the tragedy has left the community in confusion, a church insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed uncertainty over whether the beans meal was responsible for the deaths. “I ate the same beans as the victims, and nothing happened to me,” the source stated, questioning claims that the ‘ipese’ meal was to blame.
The source further mentioned that several government bodies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the World Health Organization (WHO), have initiated investigations, though their findings have yet to be released. “I can assure you, it’s not necessarily about the ‘ipese,’ but we await the official reports,” the source added.
