Nigeria – The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has weighed in on the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, assuring that the Senate is taking appropriate measures to address the matter.
The controversy began on February 20 during a heated debate over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan later alleged that her challenges in the Senate stemmed from her rejection of sexual advances from Akpabio. She formally submitted a sexual harassment petition against him on the Senate floor.
However, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed the petition, citing procedural violations and legal constraints.
Speaking to journalists ahead of International Women’s Day, the First Lady emphasized that the Senate chamber should be a place of dignity, not scandal. She encouraged women to assert themselves in leadership and not allow themselves to be disrespected.
“I know people are wondering why I haven’t taken a position on this matter, but I trust that the Senate is doing what is necessary. Such issues should not even be arising in a mature institution like the Senate,” she stated.
Reflecting on her 12-year tenure as a senator, she advised women to uphold their dignity and respond firmly to inappropriate advances.
She also praised the progress women have made over the years and highlighted young female leaders like Zuriel Oduwole, urging Nigerian women to continue striving for excellence.
