Maiduguri, Nigeria — Tension gripped Maiduguri early Wednesday as a fire outbreak at the Giwa Military Barracks armoury set off multiple explosions, prompting panic and mass evacuation among residents.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing deafening booms from the direction of the military base, sparking fears of a renewed insurgent attack.
“We thought it was Boko Haram again,” recounted Umar Gana, a resident living near the area. “People began running in all directions; the fear was real.”
Giwa Barracks is one of the most vital military installations in Nigeria’s Northeast, playing a central role in counter-insurgency efforts and housing several detainees linked to extremist activities.
While full details of the incident remain sketchy, emergency responders have been deployed, and a security cordon has been placed around the premises. Authorities have launched a probe to determine the cause of the fire.
In an official reaction, Borno State Deputy Governor, Dr. Umar Usman Kadafur, urged citizens to stay calm, clarifying that the incident was not an attack but rather an accidental fire at the armoury.
“Security agencies are on top of the situation, and there is no threat of a Boko Haram assault,” he assured.
Residents have been strongly advised to stay indoors while the military and emergency teams work to contain the aftermath.
