Ibadan, Nigeria — A midnight fire outbreak has devastated parts of the staff quarters at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, resulting in the destruction of property valued in millions of naira.
The incident, which occurred around 2:00 am on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, affected three out of four rooms in the quarters. The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed the development in a statement issued by its General Manager, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, in Ibadan, the state capital.
Akinyinka revealed that the fire, caused by electrical sparks following a power restoration by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, was promptly reported at 2:26 am.
“The firefighters, led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji, swiftly responded to the distress call and proceeded to the scene,” he stated. “Upon arrival, they found the quarters engulfed in flames. Immediate action was taken to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.”
In collaboration with the University of Ibadan Fire Department, the fire was successfully extinguished without any loss of life.
While no casualties were recorded, the blaze destroyed significant property, raising concerns over electrical safety measures in residential facilities across institutions.
