Copenhagen, Denmark— The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has adopted a Nigerian-led career progression model for community pharmacists, marking a historic milestone for the profession.
At the recently concluded 83rd FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Mr. Ambrose Igwekamma Ezeh, presented a paper titled “Standardization: Career Progression Ratings for Community Pharmacists in Nigeria,” advocating for structured career advancement for pharmacists.
The paper highlighted decades of stagnation within the sector and was endorsed as “the way forward” for community pharmacy globally.
Mr. Ezeh explained that in Nigeria, community pharmacists have long been confined to a flat system where the Superintendent Pharmacist role serves as both entry and pinnacle position.
“Theoretically, there is no distinction between a beginner and an experienced practitioner,” Ezeh stated. “This gap demoralizes pharmacists and hinders excellence in practice.”
To address this, ACPN established the Community Pharmacists Assessment and Career Progression Institute (CPACPI) to set clear standards, conduct evaluations, and open new career pathways.
“CPACPI empowers community pharmacists to deliver safe, patient-centered, and innovative healthcare services,” he added.
The initiative, now globally adopted, is expected to enhance the status of pharmacists and improve healthcare delivery quality across Nigeria.
Chairman of the FIP Community Pharmacy Section, Mr. Sheriff Guorgui, praised the Nigerian framework as a bold step toward motivating excellence and fostering international collaboration.
