FG, World Bank to Invest $10m in Skills Acquisition

The World Bank, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, has announced a $10 million investment aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with essential employment skills.

Dr. Mistura Rufai, an Education Specialist at the World Bank, disclosed this at a workshop held in Abuja on Monday.

The initiative, under the Innovation Grant Facility of the Federal Ministry of Education’s skill acquisition project, aims to empower over 50,000 youths with digital skills.

“This facility was designed to support agencies promoting innovations in digital skills training. It aims to bolster critical intervention projects in the skills development ecosystem, ensuring the cultivation of digital skills across the country,” Rufai stated.

She added that the training program includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with around 10,000 youths currently enrolled at the national level.

Blessing Ogwu, National Project Coordinator of IDEAS, emphasized the program’s goal of providing every Nigerian child with the opportunity to learn and acquire self-reliant skills. “The essence of this project is to focus on skill acquisition to reduce unemployment in Nigeria. It’s evident we have many unemployed youths,” she said.

Prof. Ndem Ayara, an IGF Consultant, explained that the project, a Public-Private Partnership, will be implemented over twelve months. “The private sector will contribute 20 percent, with 10 percent in kind and 10 percent in cash. The cash component will serve as counterpart funding by the private sector,” Ayara noted.
